The Cairn

The way is marked by many small stones, each set where the last one could be seen, and today you add one.

The card

An old traveller bends on a windswept pass to set a smooth white stone on a cairn of grey ones. A small girl in a red hood stands at his side and reaches toward it.

Look past them, down the path. Two smaller cairns stand along the way into the misty valley. No one planned that line of markers from above. Each was built by someone who could see the one before it, and placed so the next walker could see it in turn. The route through the mountains is the sum of those short sightlines.

Essence

The Cairn is accumulated wisdom: many small acts that mean little alone and together guide whoever comes next. Each stone is a lesson or a choice, placed with care. You receive the path from those before you, and you add to it for those after.

For today

Which marker are you steering by, and who is steering by yours?

You cannot see the whole road. Nobody who built these cairns could. They only had to watch the nearest marker and set theirs within sight of it. Today, pay that kind of close attention. Notice the one or two people near you whose example you are actually following, and the one or two who are watching you, perhaps without saying so.

Then place one stone well. Finish one task cleanly enough that the person after you can pick it up. Answer one question fully. Write down the one thing you learned the hard way. It is a small mark, but the path is made of nothing else.
